Reports on the large-scale therapeutic failure of conventional treatment of pentavalent antimony (Sb) in patients with visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) in India. Symptoms of kala-azar; Development of cardiotoxicity in ten percent of patients consistent with Sb-induced effects; Abandonment of the use of Sb; Use of amphotericin B or one of its lipid formulations.
