The article examines how author Henry James' perceptions of the city of Venice, Italy shaped his writing of his protagonist, Isabel Archer, and her perceptions of Rome, Italy in the book "The Portrait of a Lady." Topics include how Isabel's tour through Europe leads to her perceptions during her time in Italy, Isabel's relationship with expatriate Gilbert Osmond in Italy, and James' writings in the book's preface on the difference between Rome and Venice.
