- Abstract
The article discusses a research study about the regulation of circulating sclerostin levels by sex steroids in postmenopausal women and elderly men. Findings revealed that circulating estrogen (E) treatment of postmenopausal women for four weeks led to a 27 percent increase in serum sclerostin levels, and E also prevented increases in sclerostin levels following induction of sex steroid deficiency. The researchers found the correlation between changes in sclerostin levels and changes in bone resorption, but not bone formation and bone markers.
