The article discusses the potentially negative impact of electronic books (e-books) on public libraries in the U.S. as of March 2013, focusing on the first sale doctrine of American copyright law, library lending practices, and contractual license agreements between publishers, distributors, and customers. Other topics include digital rights management (DRM), copyright infringement actions, and an ownership requirement in the first sale doctrine. The exclusive rights of authors are examined.
