- Abstract
This document is a lecture by Professor Eric Richards on riots, protests, and gender in nineteenth-century Sutherland, Scotland. The lecture focuses on the case study of Clashmore, a crofter community in the remote Highlands, where there were occasional outbreaks of resistance against the landlord's agents and the law. The lecture examines the social and economic conditions of the community, the reasons behind the riots, and the response of the estate administrators. It also emphasizes the significant role of women in leading and participating in the protests. The lecture offers valuable insights into the dynamics of rioting and gender in the pre-industrial economy, challenging traditional assumptions about women's involvement and calling for further research in this area.
