- Authors
Warkentin, Karen
- Abstract
The article discusses Old Colony Mennonite identity, particularly gender roles, in Old Colony Mennonite communities. The author attempts to establish a connection between collective memory and the formation of an Old Colony Mennonite identity. The article examines memories of Old Colony Mennonites in Bolivia that were formed during their time in other colonies in places such as Mexico, Belize, and East Paraguay, in addition to original Mennonite colonies established in Bolivia in the 1960s. The author draws upon interviews conducted with Old Colony Mennonites in Bolivia during which Old Colony Mennonites emphasized community over individuality. It discusses gender roles in establishing a new colony, land ownership, and economic standing and identity.
