- Title
From Textbooks to Tea Parties: An Appalachian Antecedent of Anti-Obama Rebellion.
- Authors
Mason, Carol
- Abstract
The essay discusses the ways in which a 1974 controversy over language arts textbooks in Kanawha County, West Virginia influenced the later development of the region's conservative Tea Party protest movement. The author evaluates the protesters' affiliations with powerful national conservative organizations, and concludes that such an association does not reduce the authenticity or grassroots nature of the movement.
