- Title
EMPATHIE ALS MORALISCHER ZWANG.
- Authors
von Poser, Anita
- Abstract
The article presents a study of the cultural dimensions of empathy as expressed in Daiden in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea, among the Bosmun people. The author discusses systemic theoretical approaches and ethnographic illustrations in her attempts to understand and portray how the emotion of empathy plays a role in Bosmun society. She finds that empathy is expressed in regular food-related actions and activities in which the people feel obligated and permitted to inquire about each others' lives. She also argues that the Bosmun way of living provides an atmosphere in which empathy rather than individualism thrives and that empathy works as a moral force in that society.
