- Abstract
The article describes the formation of the surnames of the Pakoštane population from the late 16th to the mid 19th century, on the basis of information derived from the parish registries of the deceased; the registries of souls; tabular registers; the Godar; and the parish registries of confessions and communion (Status Animarum) from the mid 19th century; and other accessible documents, such as testaments, lists, and various reports. Until 1825, most of these registries had been kept in the italic Glagolitic script (Glagolitic quick script), and later in the Latin script. The author endeavoured to connect the families mentioned in the Contract of 1597, the Census of 1608, the registries of souls of the late 17th and 18th centuries, the parish registry of the deceased, and the transcript of the Godar dating early 17th century that had been kept until the mid 20th century, to the parish registries of confessions and communion (Status Animarum) dating mid 19th century. This book contains a special section for nicknames, which had been used for easier detection of the occurrence of the surname and its transformation into another (based on father's or mother's names or nicknames) within a family. It was concluded that the majority of (family) names from 1597 and 1608 have been preserved in other forms (transformed into new surnames) until the mid 19th century, but also up to the present date. Confraternities are an important factor in the development of the village. Th ey are also important in connection with the study of the everyday life of the local population in the period 17th - 18th centuries. All registries of confraternities have disappeared; we can however prove the number of confraternities on the basis of the transcript of the Glagolitic Godar, thanks to the fact that the Godar, inter alia, includes the information about every deceased person's belonging to a particular confraternity.
