- Abstract
Obesity increases with duration of residence in the United States, and confers risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and other chronic illnesses. Therefore, this review focused on the topic of prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity among immigrants and refugees from Africa. In a systematic review of the literature, five articles published after 2000 were identified that address this topic, including reports on intervention development and intervention delivery. We describe these reports with a focus on cultural implications. Research on this topic supports the importance of engaging community partners, delivering interventions in community settings, and using the parent as an agent for family behavior change. We note the limitations of this small body of work, and present recommendations for developing and evaluating future programs. As healthcare professionals with knowledge of and connections to immigrant communities, nurses can play a key role in the delivery of culturally congruent interventions to reduce obesity-related health disparities in this growing population.
