- Abstract
This article explores the circle of Ulster literary male friendships of author Forrest Reid. Reid, an Ulster novelist, had complex attitudes reflected in his writing and personal life. He developed close friendships with writers such as Walter de la Mare and E.M. Forster, and his relationships with aspiring young male writers were structured more like one-on-one tutorials. Reid's friendships and personal contradictions were influenced by his Victorian upbringing, his ambivalence towards Ulster politics and society, and his exploration of unconventional ideas and his own sexuality through literature. The article also discusses Reid's relationship with Stephen Gilbert and his struggle to reconcile homosocial desire with homosexuality. Overall, Reid's friendships and personal journey reflect the changing social and sexual dynamics of the early twentieth century.
