- Title
« L'expérience me l'apprend » : Marc Michel Rey et la presse en Hollande.
- Authors
Bahier-Porte, Christelle
- Abstract
A few years after moving to Amsterdam, Marc Michel Rey took over the Dutch edition of the Journal des Savants from 1749 to 1780. Rey imagined that the periodical, which enriched the Parisian edition with "interesting news" from all over Europe, would be a venue where scientific and literary information was distributed, based on collective writing and taking advantage of a printing liberty that was greater in Holland than in Paris. It was this idea that he defended when he thought of publishing a new periodical with La Beaumelle, praising his "experience" as bookseller and press publisher. Mostly using Rey's correspondence, this article explains the role that the bookseller/press publisher wanted to play in distributing knowledge and ideas across Europe.
