French Studies and Creative Writing:Writing Self and Other Any where out of the world.
- Authors
ROLLS, ALISTAIR
- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between French Studies and the discipline of creative writing. Particular focus is given to the role of French Studies in the teaching of creative writing in Anglo-Saxon universities. As an example, the author presents literary criticism of the short story "The Hunter" by E. L. Doctorow with an emphasis on Baudelairean prose-poetic analysis. It is suggested that by introducing practices of creative reading into creative writing workshops, teachers can demonstrate to students that deconstructive models of textual analysis can lead to the positive construction of meaning. Other topics include self-alterity and the role of creative writing programs in university English departments.
