The article focuses on the personification of a wounded Earth in John Milton's poem `Paradise Lost'. The extension of the scope of the Fall from a human to a cosmological event is examined, and the personification of the Earth in Scripture is explored. The mingling of scriptural commentary and Roman science in the poem is also touched on.
