- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses reading education and ways that elementary and middle school students could be encouraged to read independently for 25 minutes a day at home as well as at school. The educational benefits of independent reading include increased vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency. Suggestions for creating school or classroom environments where independent reading is encouraged include asking parents and teachers to collaborate together, doing math to figure out how much reading students will have to do to meet the Million-Minute Reading Challenge, and getting buy-in from all of the teachers and staff into the program.
