- Abstract
The article reports on the implementation of a reading grant from the International Reading Association's Developing Countries' Fund at an elementary school in Jamaica. The author and the classroom teacher collected nonfiction, or informative texts, to teach lessons on bananas and hurricanes to a first grade class. The project was monitored and participants were interviewed to assess the scientific grasp of students regarding bananas' culture and use, as well as the properties and classification of hurricanes.
