- Title
Drink-Corn: Revising the Entry in the Oxford English Dictionary.
- Authors
Pritchard, Jonathan
- Abstract
The article discusses the history and meaning of the word "drink-corn." The author suggests that the definition in the "Oxford English Dictionary" (OED) of "the grain used in brewing, barley" comes from the 1681 edition of the text "Systema Agriculturæ" by John Worlidge. The author examines uses of the word by 16th-century agricultural writer Thomas Tusser and 17th-century authors including Reverend Robert Horne and poet John Taylor. The author discusses the 20th-century use of the word by agricultural historiographer Peter Mathias and suggests that the entry for "drink-corn" in the OED should be revised.
