- Abstract
The article discusses the epic poem "Mondo nuovo" by Tommaso Stigliani. It focuses on the use of Dante Alighieri's poem "Divina Commedia" and explorer Christopher Columbus as a character in the poem. The effects of Catholicism, the Protestant Reformation, and the colonial efforts of Italy and the papacy on Italian literature of the 17th century are discussed. Stigliani's use of the work of Torquato Tasso's epic poem "Gerusalemme liberata" is also explored.
