- Authors
Barsella, Susanna
- Abstract
The article reports on humanists Giovanni Boccaccio and Francesco Petrarch's treatment of the life and writings of Camaldolese theologian Peter Damian. Damian was popular for his anti-scholastic theology and his active involvement in the Gregorian Reform of the Church in the 11th century. The role that Damian would have played in the design of Petrarch's book "De vita solitaria" is explained. The influence of early Christian hagiography on Boccaccio's "Life of San Peter Damian" is discussed.
