Reports disputes in the American gene-therapy field over a proposal to eliminate the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). Creation of the committee in the mid-1970s, in response to public fears of genetic engineering; The NIH's view that the proposal to disband the RAC is a good one; The plan to transfer the RAC's function to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); Opposition of politicians and scientists.
