- Abstract
This study is carried out to reveal which of the promotional activities concerning detailed information on the university/department/programs are mostly utilized by the university candidates and how the promotional tools affect the candidates' preferences. The main questions to be answered in this study serve to find out "how the university candidates collect information from the available sources about the university and department of their choice" and "how promotional activities on which universities spend a considerable amount of time and manpower to affect the candidates' preferences." In this context, the performed questionnaire aims to contribute to making the universities more effective and productive regarding the promotional activities through the case of Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. Within the scope of the study, a 30-item scale is developed to measure the effectiveness of university promotional tools and to determine the sources of information about the universities. During the academic year of 2016-2017, a questionnaire survey has been applied to all freshman students of Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, considering that they might have benefited from different and new promotional tools to which they might have reflected their preferences. According to the results of the research, it is concluded that the effectiveness levels of the university promotional tools are closest to those of other promotional tools except for the social media. Social media tools are the most commonly used promotional tools. The social media tools utilized by the student in making their preferences are comprised of Facebook (45.7%) and Instagram 18.5%.
