- Abstract
The article "On the Historical and Biographical Backgrounds of Schumpeter's Theory of Democracy" by Ulrich Hedtke examines the backgrounds of Joseph Schumpeter's theory of democracy, particularly in relation to his work "Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy" (CSD). Schumpeter identifies the nobility as a war-driving force in imperialism, while in CSD he portrays the nobility as a politically protective class. He argues that the bourgeoisie needs political leadership and that democracy must enable a fruitful coexistence of society and economy. Schumpeter views Bolshevism as a historical form of imperialism. The text deals with Schumpeter's theory of democracy, his engagement with the problem of democracy, and his political and economic views. It also emphasizes Schumpeter's perspective on political issues of his time and his work on CSD. Schumpeter sees democracy as an instrument for selecting political leadership and emphasizes the importance of consensus-building.
