- Abstract
An experimental study is made of the effect of a gradient of the fluid velocity on the value of the shear viscosity in a critical guaiacolglycerin solution with a stratification region as the lower critical temperature for stratification is approached. It is shown that the interaction of concentration fluctuations with a gradient of the fluid velocity effectively decreases the measured value of the viscosity and that a theoretical description of the experimental results can be given by taking into account the breakdown of the Newtonian behavior of the viscosity near the critical temperature for stratification.
