- Abstract
Against the background of some avant garde novels of German and French literature of the 1960's, the article deals with the connection between space and language. At the same time, the purpose is not simply to show how diversely space is presented in literature, but to what extent it is bound up in a special way of writing with the literary language in its mode of existence and function. First, attention is directed to the novel "Der Schatten des Körpers des Kutschers" ("The Shadow of the Coachman's Body") by Peter Weiss and the technique of writing applied there. Homologies with texts of the nouveau roman suggest the notion of a discursive formation. A correspondence can for example be seen in that in these texts simulacra are created which make necessary a reconceptalization of the concept of fiction. With help of the methodological framework of Foucault's discourse analysis, the symbolic discursive formation is examined with respect to the intermediate whereby Foucault's thoughts from earlier literary ontology are integrated. The concept of the intermediate , with which the discourse formation is to be more closely characterized, refers to a middle realm of literary presentation which is construed as directed to the examined texts in order to make visible a "space for language" in which the signification comes into play. At the end of the article some conclusions are drawn with respect to the epistemological function of this literary discourse formation.
