- Abstract
Music competitions are culturally and socially important artistic events that have long influenced the promotion of music culture. Among the various artistic fields in which competitions are held, the institutionalization of classical music competitions is particularly advanced. In recent years, these competitions have developed beyond the mere discovery and training of musicians and the promotion of music culture to become public events with a long-term perspective for the local communities in which they are held. Cooperation with the local community is necessary to hold these competitions sustainably. However, little research has been conducted on the relationship between classical music competitions and local culture and society. Therefore, this study considers Japan's leading music competitions (two international and two domestic), which have particularly close relationships with local communities, as case studies to clarify these relationships and situations. Then, it examines the potential of music competitions for community development. A multifaceted study of these competitions using triangulation revealed that all of them were held in collaboration with the local government, residents, and local businesses and had become cultural symbols of their respective cities. In addition, resident volunteers not only assisted in their management, but they also contributed to promoting community interaction and each individual's self-realization. Therefore, competitions could become a source of local pride and expand the horizons of local music culture.
