- Abstract
This paper applies concepts from self-translation theory to examine the ways in which Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill's duallanguage poem "Feis" opens up alternatives beyond the binaries. It begins with an exploration of how Ní Dhomhnaill draws on material from pseudohistorical sources, especially the Lebor Gabála Érenn, then it shows how she works with a trio of prototypes, namely the Irish Sovereignty Goddess Mór Mumhan; the Great Mother of the Irish people Cessair Cruthach; and the legendary filí/poet Amorgen Glúingel. The paper goes on to interpret how the trialectic logic of selftranslation theory blurs boundaries between life and writing to incarnate Ní Dhomhnaill as the Mother/Goddess paradox within the poem. Ultimately, it concludes that "Feis" ends in colossal heartbreak yet still points to an iconic "gestait" beyond the binary divide--the female filí, who can spark her own "song-birth."
