- Abstract
Background: the monitoring of physiological parameters and the assessment of behavioural responses to painful stimuli have been proposed for many years to assess the presence of pain in critically ill patients. Materials and methods: a Focus Group type qualitative study was conducted and attended by the nursing staff of the Lecco Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care. The goal was to explore feelings, experiences and opinions on the problem about assessing and managing of pain in critical care. Results: 21 nurses participated in the research in two Focus Groups. Three issues were addressed concerning the primary objective: the greatest difficulties in detecting pain in intensive care, the categories of patients in which pain is most underestimated and the utility of a non-verbal scale in critical care. Discussion: pain assessment in intensive care is particularly complex because of the presence of many barriers characterizing the clinical complexity: an inadequate cure setting, lack of awareness and knowledge by the intensive team members about the systems of assessment and pain treatment protocols. Conclusions: the problem of proper evaluation and management of pain in intensive care is not overcome, despite the willingness and openness to change shown by nurses.
