The article traces the history of the teaching of anthropology at the University of Tartu in Estonia. Pathology professor Daniel Georg Balk delivered lectures at a rented house at Struve Street. Juhan Aul established an anthropology section in the Estonian Naturalists' Society, which owned the house used by the university. The Centre for Physical Anthropology at the university joined the research in anthropology in 1994.
