- Abstract
The article explores how cultural phenomenon of Marianism is a defining part of Brazilian women's experiences in prison and therefore in nonfiction prison narratives about inmates and visitors. Topics discussed include bonds offer support between women in an isolating, patriarchal place; U.S.-led expansion of neoliberalism and the War on Drugs; and implementing minimal sentencing rules for nonviolent offenders.
