- Abstract
Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess reasons students seek a career in dentistry, their perceptions of the dental school admissions process, and their expectations of the profession. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using data from a self-administered questionnaire to all first-year students enrolled in the 2012 at Ahmedabad Dental College and Hospital (N=100). A total of 83 students responded completely. Frequency analysis and chi-square tests were used to compare frequencies between male and female students. Results: Out of 83, there are only 20 (24.1%) male students and 63 (75.9%) are female students. 41 (49.39%) of students perceived that dentistry has bright future and selected dentistry as career as there is no emergency 37 (44.58%). Majority of student select Ahmedabad Dental Collage and Hospital because of its reputation. Above half of the students (n=47, 56.63%) selected dentistry by their own perceptive. 53 (56.63%) students believe dentistry as a high professional status. Most of the students (n=72, 86.75%) wants to help the needy people. 53 (63.86%) students wants to do further study for their future plan. There was no significant gender difference (P>0.05) on any of the motivational items covered in the questionnaire. Conclusion: The results show that the students continue to enter the dental profession for many of the factors. Personal views and concepts about profession are major influencing factors for choosing dentistry as a career.
