- Abstract
In past centuries, religion has been the response shared and codified by the social context regarding the themes of life and death. Even today, for a large part of humanity, religions are an answer to the questions of meaning on the existential level, albeit with important and radical changes compared to past times. The integration of religious and spiritual aspects into care practice may allow greater attention and more effective responses to patients' personal suffering. In order to carry out these functions it is required an articulated preparation that includes conceptual study, a specific preparation in the health area and adequate self-knowledge, resulting from introspective work and serious personal accompaniment. The world of spiritual needs today has become so complex and differentiated that the traditional schemes and methods of pastoral intervention, which were conceived as parallel but not integrated in the care teams, should be accompanied by the experimentation of more advanced care models. All this to contrast the risk of denying the necessary response to the spiritual needs of patients now recognized as essential by scientific literature.
