- Abstract
The article reports on the progress made by 14 countries in providing national blood transfusion services under the Emergency Plan for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Relief (PEPFAR) of the U.S. based on an analysis of data between 2008 and 2010 conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The top priority of PEPFAR has been to increase blood collections and prevent transfusion-transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The analysis focused on the adequacy of blood supply and transfusion safety in these countries. Global blood donations reached about 92 million blood units in 2008 and about 4.3% of those units went to sub-Saharan Africa. Twelve countries remained to have a national blood policy in place in 2010 based on the analysis. INSET: Untitle.
