- Abstract
Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic affected the world's education system, causing changes in its functioning. Objectives: To characterize the non-face-to-face teaching activities imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and to investigate the auditory and extra-auditory effects in this population. Methods: Exploratory, cross-sectional research, approved by the Ethics Committee (number 2,732,475), carried out by a questionnaire. The population was composed of teachers from the South of Brazil who were teaching classes remotely at the time of their participation, by signing the consent form. Results: Eighty three teachers participated, with a mean age of 40.5 years (±4.95), ranging from 20 to 62 years. Female predominance (83%) and performance in basic education (54.40%), followed by higher education (42.20%). Working time ranged from one to 32 years, with a mean of 12.71 years (±9.03), and almost half of the sample (47.70%) worked for 40 hours or more. 51 (61.45%) teachers reported not having a suitable place and 42 (50.60%) reported that they were sometimes exposed to noise. Auditory effects were mentioned by a few, on the other hand, stress, nervousness and anxiety (65%), as well as tiredness (60%) are among the extra-auditory effects in more than half of the teachers. The presence of noise in the work environment was associated with the presence of auditory symptoms (p=0.013). Conclusion: During the pandemic, teachers worked remotely for long periods, without adequate conditions. The presence of noise in the environment was associated with auditory and extra-auditory symptoms.
