- Abstract
Winter frost poses the greatest risk of viticulture in the Hungarian Great Plain. Temperature drops below -20 °C in Kecskemét three times in 10 years whereas the occurrence of this low temperature in the Balaton region is less than one. On 8th January 2017, the temperature dropped below -21 °C in Kecskemét. The minimum temperature was below -15-16 °C for several days. The frost tolerance of 25 grape varieties was examined and it is presented in this article. The vineyard is located in Kecskemét Máriahegy. The method of examining bud frost damage was bud forcing. The burst of main buds, secondary buds and the number of dead buds were observed. The number of clusters on shoots was also counted. Resistant grape varieties like Hibernal, Aletta, Merlot, Nero and Regent proved to be frost tolerant while the buds of some table grape varieties, like Italia, Chasselas, Beograd seedless, were seriously injured. In some varieties secondary buds survived. Bud fertility index was calculated to estimate yield.
