SCOTT, JOAN W.
- Abstract
This article examines the concept of gender in historical inquiry. The author discusses several of the other articles in this issue, which focus on her past work. She describes the relationship of sex to gender and contends they are both social constructs that hinder the understanding of women and history. She also analyzes the continuing impact of historian Denise Riley's book "Am I That Name? Feminism and the Category of Women in History." The connection between gender and politics is also discussed.
