Aboulafia, Ariana
- Abstract
The article offers an analysis of unnecessary surgeries on intersex children from a human rights perspective. A definition of the term "intersex" is offered, referring to individuals who are born with genitalia that differs from the usual definitions of male or female. Several non-normative anatomies that fall under the intersex umbrella include aphalia, clitoromegaly, and ovotestis. Some side effects of gender assignment surgery include reduced sexual sensitivity and torn genital tissue.
