- Title
Only Children: An Updated Review.
- Authors
Falbo, Toni
- Abstract
This updated review of the research literature regarding only children starts with Adler's writings, summarizes the research conducted in the 20th century, and provides examples of early 21st century research, focusing especially on Chinese only children. On average, only children tend to outscore their peers with many siblings in terms of academic abilities and achievement, although this difference is small. Many inconsistent findings regarding personality characteristics and social behavior have been reported about only children, and many of these inconsistencies are explained in terms of maturational effects and population selectivity.
