- Abstract
In the middle and late Ming Dynasty, the smuggling trade with Japan was quite brisk in the Guangdong area. Nan' ao Port and some other for smuggling trade had come into being, and many businessmen went to Japan to do business through these ports in Guangdong. There were two reasons why the trade with Japan was brisk in the Guangdong area. On one hand, the policy of Choufen was firstly carried out in Guangzhou which admitted the legality of private trade in disguised form, and it promoted the development of the Sino - Japanese trade there; on the other hand, Macau was occupied by the Portuguese, it became the out-port of Guangzhou. Large quantities of goods were transported to Japan via Macau, which indirectly promoted the prosperity of the trades with Japan in the Guangdong area.
