- Abstract
The article discusses the 2024 NOGI recipients, who are being recognized by the Academy of Underwater Arts & Sciences for their contributions to the exploration, enjoyment, safety, and preservation of the underwater world. The recipients include Louis Prézelin, an underwater photographer and filmmaker who documented the beauty of the undersea world throughout his career; Lad Akins, who has dedicated his life to citizen science, conservation, and diving; Jim Gatacre, who founded the Handicapped Scuba Association and developed safe underwater education for people with disabilities; Dr. Shirley Pomponi, a marine biotechnologist focused on sustainable methods for producing sponge-derived chemicals; and Dr. Jeffrey Bozanic, who has made significant contributions to global scuba education and safety standards.
