- Abstract
This article examines the impact of Personalism on Georgia Harkness and Martin Luther King Jr., specifically in relation to their commitment to nonviolence. While the author does not assert a direct influence of Harkness on King, they identify shared Personalist-influenced concepts of God that underpin their nonviolent beliefs. The article presents evidence of their mutual respect and familiarity with each other's work through correspondence and references to Harkness's article in King's dissertation. It also explores the convergence of their nonviolent commitments and the role of Personalism in shaping their perspectives. The article acknowledges the influence of other factors, such as King's upbringing and the Black church tradition, on his development. Overall, it offers a nuanced understanding of the relationship between Personalism, pacifism, and the prospects for nonviolence.
