- Abstract
Mankind has tried to make sense of the natural environment in which it lived throughout its existence on this planet. Our species, which examines the world and the universe over time, has made an effort to define all the objects and actions it has seen and has started to give names to all beings over time. Thanks to this naming, that is, distinguishing, he was able to develop a common language. The geography of Turkey has created all place names from the past to the future not by chance, but by being inspired by physical or human activities. This process has occurred in many dimensions from lithology to vegetation, from pedogenesis to climatology, from cultural memory to transportation activities. In this context, place names offer ideas about the formation process of civilization and the characteristics of geographical space and, in a way, tell us about the past. Within the scope of this research, rural toponymic characteristics of Midyat district of Mardin province were examined and the importance of this concept in terms of geography teaching was tried to be explained. In the classification stage, the features of human and physical geography were prioritized and subgroupings were carried out on this axis. The choice of Midyat district for the research was influenced by the linguistic richness added to the region by communities of many ethnic origins, including Assyrians, and the historical depth from the Assyrians to the Ottomans. Midyat district and its immediate surroundings have already consisted of 72 rural settlements. Within the scope of this study, the place names of these 72 villages have been classified by considering many units from their physical geography to their social-economic structure. In order to achieve this aim, soil, Corine land use and topography maps that will reveal the human-physical environment relationality within the borders of Midyat have been prepared. In this context, firstly, the digital elevation model (DEM) data of the research area was obtained for the physical geography map and the contour map was created.
