- Abstract
The article discusses the intervention of British Admiral Sir George Willes Watson (1827-1897), stationed as a British patrol in the waters of the Bahamas aboard the HMS Peterel from 1962 to 1964, in a U.S. Civil War naval battle. In the summer of 1862, the British built warship Oreto, later renamed the CSS Florida, was delivered to Nassau with the intention of its being transferred to the Confederate States of America (CSA). The aid of Watson and his ship to the Oreto/Florida was deemed an international incident involving Great Britain, the U.S., the Bahamas, and the CSA. Watson's actions were considered by the Alabama Claims tribunal of 1872 which awarded damages to the U.S. for Great Britain's involvement in the U.S. Civil War supplying British built commerce raiders to the CSA.
