The authors discusses the role of cytoreductive nephrectomy for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma which represents a significant debate over the improvement of targeted medical therapy. Topics included the studies regarding the survival benefits using the cytoreductive nephrectomy, the standard care for metastatic renal cell carcinoma, and the ongoing randomized trials on the role of cytoreductive nephrectomy with targeted therapy.
