Confucianism and Military Service in Early Seventeenth-Century Chos&obreve;n Korea.
- Authors
Nam-Lin Hur
- Abstract
The article focuses on how ruling-class men during the Choson period of Korea tried to evade military service by resorting to the privileges afforded by learning, which under Confucianism, is of greater value than the military arts. Topics discussed include the support of the ruling class for strong national defense and recognition for the interests of the elite. The mobilization of sajok men via legal measures and the conflicting values of civil duty and military arts are then mentioned.
