The article discusses Japanese philosopher Ito Jinsai's "Gomo jigi" or "The Meaning of Terms in the "Analects" and "Mencius"" and its relationship with Chinese scholar Chen Chun's "Xingli ziyi" or "The Meanings of Neo-Confucian Terms." Topics include the cross-cultural development of Neo-Confucian learning in East Asia during the 17th century, the role played by Jinsai in calling for a return to the original in Confucian study, and later development of this restoration in the 18th century.
