The article discusses French perceptions of Irish Catholics on the island of Newfoundland in modern-day Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada during the nineteenth century. It particularly focuses on Irish Catholic populations on Newfoundland's west coast and in the city of St. John's. The author addresses commentary by various French observers, including philosopher and diplomat Arthur de Gobineau.
