- Abstract
The article analyzes the sufferings of Indian women, marital discord, existentialism and emotional abuse as themes in novels written by Anita Desai. It discusses the concept of Hindu marriage as a social duty towards the family and the community. Changes in roles of married Indian women, particularly in their relationships with their husbands and their relatives, are identified. Marital discord is described as a lack of adjustment and synchronization in the marriage.
