- Title
The Specter of Deep-Sea Mining.
- Authors
CRIST, EILEEN
- Abstract
Deep-sea mining has quietly begun in recent years, with exploratory mining contracts granted for over 1 million square kilometers of seabed in international waters. The deep-sea mining industry aims to extract materials such as cobalt, copper, gold, silver, and rare earths from the ocean floor, presenting it as necessary for the high tech industry, the military-industrial complex, and the "green economy." However, this form of mining is being criticized for its environmental impact and the destruction of ancient habitats. The article suggests alternative solutions to address climate change, such as recycling, conserving materials and energy, protecting the natural world, and downsizing global trade.
