- Title
The United States and the Middle East: the Politics of Miscalculation.
- Authors
GOODMAN, MELVIN
- Abstract
This article discusses the history of U.S. involvement in the Middle East and highlights instances of political and military miscalculations that have led to strategic failures. It begins by examining Secretary of State John Foster Dulles' reneging on financial support for Egypt's Aswan Dam, which resulted in the nationalization of the Suez Canal and increased Soviet influence in Egypt. The article also discusses the Gulf War in 1990, the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, and President Joe Biden's support for Israel. It argues that these actions have caused disarray in the region and opened diplomatic opportunities for Russia and China. The author suggests that these miscalculations have had negative consequences and questions the moral implications of U.S. involvement in conflicts in the Middle East.
