- Abstract
Chile recently voted to reject a new constitution, choosing to keep the existing one from the dictatorship era. This decision reflects a growing disconnect between citizens and their representative institutions, a crisis of representation that is not unique to Chile. In 2019, pro-democracy movements erupted in nearly half of the world's nations, with people demanding dignity and democracy. The United States and Chile share a complex history, with the US having meddled in Chilean politics and supported the Pinochet regime. Both countries also struggle with high levels of inequality. Despite recent setbacks, Chile's mobilizations have led to significant policy changes and a deepening of democratic engagement. The struggle for change continues, and history shows that progress is possible.
